わたしは小学校教師のころ、連絡帳などを書くときに、子どもだけでなく、その親も褒めるよう努めていた。すると、あるお母さんがこんなことを書いてくれた。「先生、わたしは母親になってから初めて褒められました。ありがとうございます」。

　懇談会で話したら、ほかの多くのお母さんたちも「褒められたことがない」と言い出し、その話題で盛り上がったことがある。

　お母さんたちは結婚前、あるいは出産前までは、いろいろな場で褒められるが、いざ子どもを持つと、「ちゃんと育てて当たり前」「うまく家事を切り盛りして当たり前」と、褒められる機会がなくなってしまう。

　学校でも先生方は、子どもを褒めても母親までは褒めない。お父さん方も妻を褒めないし、おばあちゃんやおじいちゃんも褒めてくれない。

　世の中の多くのお母さんたちは、「こんなに頑張っているのに、どうしても誰も褒めてくれないのかしら」と本音で思っている。
